Workload Migration

Once the preparation steps are completed, you can begin with moving your workload to DCS+.

Migrate your Workload Move your computing resources.

Tip: If you want to test the migration process beforehand, we recommend copying the respective servers into another vApp or vDC. Then follow the steps outlined in this guide using these duplicated VMs. That way you can take your time, verify that the destination environment is setup correctly and become familiar with the migration procedure.

DCS Classic: Attach the VMs to the Migration Storage

Next up, you'll need to move your VMs to the newly attached migration storage. This needs to be done for each VM you'd like to migrate.

  1. From the vCD landing page, click the "My Cloud" Ribbon.
  2. In the left-hand menu, click "vApps".
  3. Open the vApp which contains the VM you would like to migrate by double clicking it.

    Open vApp - 1

  4. Go to the Properties of the VM.

  5. In the "General" tab, scroll down to "Storage Policy". Select "Migration Storage" from the drop-down menu. This changes the VM storage Default setting.

Select Migration Storage Profile - 1

  6. In the Properties menu, click on "Hardware". All disks of the server need to have either "Use VM Default" or "migration storage" selected. This will trigger a storage vMotion to the migration environment.

Select Migration Storage Profile - 2

Note: This needs to be done for all disks of the server, otherwise you won't be able to run the migration. The process may take several minutes, depending on the size of your servers. As a guideline, you can calculate around 5-6 minutes per 100GB of disk space for this.

DCS+: Migrate your Workload

Once you've completed all preparation steps, you can begin with the migration of the computing resources.

Note: At this point, you should shut down all servers that are being migrated. Once you've completed step 9 below, your running VMs will otherwise be shut down forcefully.

  1. Go to the DCS+ frontpage, and click on the "My Items" ribbon on the top.
  2. Select "Migration" from the left -hand menu. This list shows all vOrgs, which have been activated for migration in the first step.
  3. Locate the vOrg you would like to migrate and click on the "Actions" drop-down menu to the right.

    Migrate Workload - 1

  4. Select "Move Virtual Machines" from the drop down.

Note: This will show all the VMs in this vOrg, which are properly attached to the migration storage and shared with the API user. If your servers show up here, it means that the steps before were done correctly and that you can begin migration. If they don't, re-trace your steps ensure that all steps above were done as described.

  5. Click on "Target Virtual Datacenter" and choose the destination DDC in DCS+, to which the selected virtual machines should be moved to.

  6. Select the VMs that need to be migrated to this DDC.
  7. Carefully read the info about the "poweroff confirmation" box and tick the checkbox to acknowledge it.
  8. Provide your e-mail address. We will send you an e-mail notification once the migration process is completed.
  9. Click "Move Virtual Machines". This box is greyed out until you've successfully completed steps 5-8 above.

    Migrate Workload - 2

  10. You will receive an e-mail from Swisscom ( once the migration process is done. If the migrations is successful, the status will be listed as "SUCCEEDED" and you can proceed with the post-migration activities. If the status is "FAILED", then please re-run the migration process.

Note: Please leave around 5 minutes until receiving the e-mail confirmation from the system.
